Common protective-order terms
Orders may require no contact, peaceful contact only, staying a certain distance away, moving out of a shared residence, surrendering firearms, or avoiding specific locations. The exact wording controls, so read it carefully.
Violations can create new problems
Do not rely on informal permission from another person. If the court order says no contact, contact can still create a violation even if the other person initiates it. Keep copies of the order and ask counsel before responding to messages.
Only the court can change the order
If an order is too broad or creates work, housing, or family issues, a lawyer may request modification. Until the judge changes it, the existing order should be followed exactly.
When to call a lawyer
Call if you were served, charged with violation, need a modification, or do not understand the terms. Neil Panchal Law can help you understand restrictions and protect your defense.
